Five Top Low-THC Marijuana Strains

What do the elderly, sick children, military veterans, professional athletes and possibly even mom and dad, all have in common?

They are all part of a growing number of Americans who look to cannabidiol (CBD) from marijuana and hemp as an important daily nutrient that they believe can keep them healthier, stronger and better protected and able to take on what life throws at them.

Be sure to check our companion article (Five Top High-CBD Marijuana Strains), for background on CBD, THC Marijuana and the potential medical benefits they offer. You will also find great advice on which high-CBD marijuana strains you might want to try for back pain, anxiety, or even to strengthen your bones.

Medical Marijuana in Two Minutes, by Dr Sanjay Gupta

For the elderly, low-THC marijuana can be a great way to scale back the number and/or potency of the prescriptions they take on a regular basis. A recent study published by Health Affairs, authors Bradford and Bradford suggest that the U.S. could save several billion dollars annually if marijuana where legalized nationwide.

The notion is rooted in the fact that medical marijuana availability is strongly correlated with a significant decline in the overall number of prescriptions filled in a particular community. The authors found that a 2% drop in medicaid prescription expenses could be achieved by simply legalizing medical marijuana across the nation.

A 2% drop in prescription costs translates into big savings for state and federal government, and underscores the powerfully positive impact marijuana can have on society. For more details on how this is possible, check out this article I wrote on the subject for the CBD Business Blog in April (READ: Federal Legalization of Medical Marijuana Could Save Government $3.8 Billion).

Dr. Sanjay Gupta investigates Cannabidiol (CBD)

Have you ever considered smoking marijuana with the express intention NOT to get high? Well, a growing number of athletes are doing just that. Professional and retired athletes alike, are looking to CBD to help with recovery time, relieve chronic aches and pains, and to tap into the powerful neuroprotective, anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that medical science is only now discovering.

Military veterans and others suffering from PTSD also find relief with low-THC Marijuana/high-CBD marijuana. John Oliver describes the insanity well, in this terrific piece from Last Week Tonight with John Oliver (HBO)…

Kids with intractable (uncontrollable with modern medicine) forms of epilepsy, such as Dravet Syndrome, are able to leave relatively normal and happy lives thanks to CBD oil. Listen to this 8 minute portion of a CNN documentary by Dr. Sanjay Gupta called Weed. It spotlight’s Charlotte’s Web medical marijuana/hemp.

Now let’s take a look at the CBD Medical Journal’s picks for top lowTHC marijuana…

Charlottes’ web is made from hemp and contains virtually no THC THC Marijuana at all. With less than .5% THC, Charlotte’s Web boasts upwards of 20% CBD by weight.

Developed by the Stanley Brothers in Colorado and named after Charlotte Figi, who was born with Dravet syndrome – an extreme form a childhood epilepsy which can bring as many as 300 seizures a week (see CNN video above).

The official Charlotte’s Web strain is currently only widely available in Colorado. Another strain very low in THC, yet also extremely high in CBD is AC/DC.

With typical THC Marijuana levels of 1% – 2% and CBD levels nearing 20%, this popular California grown marijuana is definitely worth a try.

AC/DC provides a very relaxing experience with just enough THC to help with appetite and pain. A Hybrid strain, AC/DC has 50/50 sativa and indica genetics.

Produced by crossing Ruderalis and Cannatonic strains, it has a pleasant sweet and skunky odor. A winner of several Cannabis Cup awards, Charlotte’s Web is a great strain to help reduce pain and anxiety, The strain has also been known to impart euphoric effects while allowing one to remain focused and relaxed.

Typically with no THC Marijuana, Avidekel is an Israeli creation.

With CBD levels as high as 16%, Avidekel is a force to be reckoned with.

Grown by government licensed cannabis breeders, Avidekel’s medical benefits are now being studied at Hebrew University.

For many medical marijuana patients in Israel, Avidekel is the go to bud for treating inflammation, arthritis, diabetes and even heart disease.

 Harle-Tsu

Bred by crossing the two powerhouse High-CBD strains, Harlequin and Sour Tsunami, Harle-Tsu is reported to achieve a 20:1 CBD: THC Marijuana ratio, with CBD levels approaching 24%!

This would make Harle-Tsu one of the highest CBD marijuana strains on the market.

 Bedtrocan

A Canadian invention, Bedrocan (Bedrolite) achieves 9% CBD levels, with typical THC levels below 1%.

A good strain for first time medical marijuana users. The low THC Marijuana levels allow you to avoid significant psychoactive effects, while still achieving solid CBD levels.

Bedrocan is available as Bedrolite, a granulated concentrate intended for patients suffering from intractable (untreatable) forms of epilepsy.
